Islamic Manuscripts: An Introduction to Codicology and Paleography

Lecturers: Professor Nuria M. de Castilla, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes and Professor Arianna D'ottone, Sapienza University of Rome, with the participation of Hebrew University's Professor Amnon Cohen, Professor Rachel Milstein, and Dr. Tawfiq Da'adli.

This course is intended for scholars and students wishing to expand their knowledge on the development, identification, and interpretation of Islamic manuscripts.

Prior academic study of Islam and/or Classical Arabic is recommended for those wishing to participate in the course.

The course will be in English.

Topics include:

  • Identification and interpretation of various Arabic scripts

  • Acquaintance with different papers, inks, and other manuscript features

  • The history of the book in the Islamic sphere

  • The Islamic arts of the book

  • Ottoman court documents

  • Hands-on sessions with Arabic, Persian, and Turkish manuscripts from the collections of the National Library of Israel

Registration ends May 4 or until the course is full.

The course will be held over eight consecutive days from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The course will begin on July 17, 2018 and end on July 26, 2018.

Cost: 1,900 NIS
